The theme for the event was “Being Spiritually Fed Through Prayer” with guest speaker Dr. Kim Regis--minister, nurse, author, personal development coach, speaker, consultant, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Dr. Regis provided members with the “Recipe for Relief.” Other program participants included Dr. Dorinda Gallant (Welcome), Ms. Yenetta Harper (The Occasion), Ms. Karen White (Meditation), Ms. Quanda Hairston (Introduction of the Speaker), and Ms. A’va Dukes (Closing Remarks). International Day of Prayer is one of several Impact Days observed under the Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service administration under the leadership of Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover, International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
On Sunday, June 13, 2021, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® Psi Eta Omega Chapter presented scholarships to three Columbus area high school graduates during a virtual scholarship recognition program via Zoom. The president, Dr. Dorinda Gallant, gave an inspirational welcome to the scholarship recipients.
Dr. Gallant presented the Dr. Lynn C. Chaver Merit Scholarship to Juan Gomez, a graduate of South High School, who was also the Valedictorian of his graduating class. Ms. Cheryl Jones presented the Psi Eta Omega Memorial Scholarship to Maleah Coker, a graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. Maleah plans to use the scholarship to finish furnishing her dorm room and to assist with needed books and supplies. Ms. Jones presented the Psi Eta Omega Scholarship to Jaida Plair, a graduate of Pickerington Central High School. Jaida plans to use the scholarship for books and materials for college.
The closing remarks were given by Ms. Anitra Freeman, who wished the recipients much success in their college experience.
Psi Eta Omega Chapter’s Target IV: The Arts! hosted a virtual book discussion of Pulitzer Prize, Nobel Prize and Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Toni Morrison’s Sula on Friday, June 11, at 7 p.m. This was a continuation of a previous discussion held on February 18, 2021 in honor of Toni Morrison Day. Unpacking was the strategy we used as we discussed the themes reflected in the second half of the book. We were given a warm welcome by our President, Dr. Dorinda Gallant. The themes discussed were race, racism, love, sexuality, suffering, community identity, motherhood, and gender roles. The discussion was moderated by our very own Yenetta Bell-Harper, who is a former English teacher and whose passion for the written word was evident as she led the discussion. Fifteen chapter members and guests were in attendance and engaged in the discussion. As women, especially black women, having healthy conversations about us is so important for maintaining a strong mindset and positive attitude. The discussion of Toni Morrison’s Sula allowed exactly that.
